Types of Lawn Care Contracts

Lawn care contracts should cater to different customer or business needs, depending on the location that needs a service. Both service providers and clients should be sure to have a contract in place before starting the process. Here's a breakdown of the most common types of lawn care contracts:

  • Seasonal contracts: These contracts cover lawn care services for a specific season, and focus on the unique needs of each, such as fertilization in the spring, weed control and watering in the summer, or leaf cleanup in the fall.
  • Annual contracts: Offers year-round coverage, providing lawn care on a regular maintenance basis.
  • Custom contracts: For a one-time service like pest control, fertilizing or mowing, these provide a simple solution for the client.

Most Common Types of Lawn Care Services

There’s a lot more to lawn care than just cutting grass. These popular services are often included in a lawn care package contract:

  • Mowing: Keeps lawns looking fresh and easy to maintain, often including edging services to keep it tidy.
  • Fertilization: Feeding the lawn proper nutrients to avoid browning and dead grass.
  • Weed control: There are various ways to handle weeds, from treatments to physical removal.
  • Aeration: Refreshes the lawn by aerating the soil to improve water and nutrient flow.
  • Pest control: Managing and treating lawn insects and pests to prevent damage.
  • Seasonal cleanup: Helps maintain the lawn's health and appearance year-round.

Common Elements of a Lawn Care Contract

When drafting up any contract, you want to be sure to include clear guidelines for the work that will be performed, as well as laying out any liability and payment concerns.

  • Detailed scope of work: A detailed scope of work maps out the details of the services and how often they'll be performed.
  • Pricing and payment: Outlines the cost of each service, when payment is due, and the preferred payment methods.
  • Contract duration: Be sure to include if the services are year round, seasonal or one-time.
  • Responsibilities: When it comes to lawn care, you need to outline the details of access like unlocking the gate to providing water access.
  • Renewal and termination conditions: How to extend the business relationship if it goes well, or end the contact when services are no longer needed.
  • Dispute resolution: Outlines how any disagreements or disputes will be handled.

Additional Aspects of a Lawn Care Contract

Want to keep your cash flow predictable and your schedule full? A deposit is a great option for your lawn care business success. You can ask for partial payment in advance of the service, or monthly, to ensure that hard work will be paid for.

Lawn care providers can also issue quotes and estimates for customers, so they know what to expect (and lower risk of payment disputes). This helps grow your business, by offering transparency and honesty.
